This is
a continuation of discourse on nonviolent movement. Ayele Egziabeher:
an
Educational Discourse # 2.
A
unitary opposition movement is necessary.
The "Respect the Vote" nonviolent movement has united
opponents to tyrannical governance. The opposition parties, Kinijit and
UEDF,
had begun contributing the necessary struggle towards attaining the "Respect the Vote" movement.
In particular, the eight-point demands presented by Kinijit will help
bring
democracy to Ethiopia. While Kinijit is a unitary party, UEDF is a
coalition of
parties. Since the UEDF is a coalition of parties, different parities
within it
have pursued different forms of struggle with regard to the issue of
entering
parliament. Hence, differences in the modes of struggle were exhibited
not only
between Kinijit and UEDF but also within the UEDF itself. These
differences are
mentioned not to offer a criticism but to expose the truth. Had Kinijit
and
Hebret worked under one organization there would not have been the
difference
in the modes of struggle. Working in one organization implies working
pursuing goals
agreed upon by the leader of the organization, while, as human beings,
difference in attaining minor goals cannot be disallowed.
When the
parliament opened on October 10, the tyrannical governance has included
299 of
disputed-representatives (DR) in it. How did the 299 DR of the
tyrannical
governance come about? In some constituencies the votes of the people
were
maliciously given to the representatives of the tyrannical governance.
In other
constituencies, those opposed to the tyrannical governance were not
allowed to
vote. After the election of May 15 Kinijit and Hebret opposed the
activities
taken by the so-called National Election Board (NEB). The European
Union
Election Observation Members (EUEOM) and the Carter Center (CC) had
expressed
that they had noted election irregularities. Additionally,
the tyrannical governance charged that Kinijit
and Hebret had coerced voters to elect them in some constituencies and
required
the NEB to include all disputed constituencies, including
constituencies that
were disputed by the bogus claims of the Tyrannical governance, to be
reevaluated. The number of disputed constituencies was 299.
Addis Ababa University students began grumbling that the
tyrannical
regime was rigging the election. The tyrannical governance killed 42
people in
the June 6-8 period. European representatives intervened and the
parties agreed
that the NEB should investigate the case of the disputed 299
constituencies in
transparent and agreeable ways. However, the NEB conducted the
reevaluation in
non-transparent ways and, despite the objections of Kinijit and Hebret,
gave
the 299 constituencies to the tyrannical governance. On October 10
Kinijit
submitted an 8-point condition that will open democratic discourse to
the
leader of the tyrannical governance, Ato Meles. Remarkably, the
parliament in
which the 299 DR of the tyrannical governance are housed voted to deny
parliamentary immunity to about 109 duly elected members of parliament
(MP) the
belong to the Kinijit party and effectively denied them participation
in
parliament. Therefore, from the 547 parliamentarians about 408 (299 +109) duly elected representatives
of Ethiopia have been denied entry into parliament.
From the remaining 149 representatives about 54 are members
of Hebret. From this we find that only about 95 MPs have been agreed
upon by
the opposition to be duly elected members that belong to the tyrannical
governance. Clearly, the tyrannical governance does not have the vote
of
Ethiopians to form a government.
It does not respect the vote of Ethiopians.
Hence, the nonviolent movement "Respect
the Vote" is opposed to the tyrannical
governance.
